Tips for Starting New Client Relationships Off Right

Once a new client has decided to hire you, there are some basic steps you can take to make sure the relationship starts off on a positive note.

  1. Have your client service person join the initial meeting and have him or her send the client a copy of your firm’s materials and checklist ahead of the meeting. That way, during the actual meeting, the client service professional can review the checklist to help ensure you get all the information you need to do your job. This will also help instill confidence in your firm and demonstrate it has an efficient process. 
  2. Introduce your new client to your entire team, if you have one. This includes any partners, advisers, administrative personnel and client service members. This demonstrates to the client that they are not hiring only you, but your entire team. 
  3. Be sure to balance our pleasantries and making the human connection with getting down to business. Don’t lose sight of the fact that the client hired you to do a job. Revisit items they discussed with you during the hiring process, confirm their financial priorities, and outline the what the can expect from you, including how frequently you’ll meet and communicate with them.
